Members of Te Roroa sowing manuka

First the manuka, later comes kauri planting.

In 1990, under the guidance of ecologist Stephen King, low cost direct seeding of manuka was successfully pioneered here at Waipoua.

These visionary Te Roroa kaitiaki (guardians) are sowing 800 million manuka seeds to get the Millennium Kauri Forest started. In 1,000 years time they'll be keen to ask the boss for a day off to come and check out the results! In the meantime this will be great kiwi habitat in just five years, and it will be rewarding to watch the young kauri grow.

Thanks guys and kia kaha! Your mokopuna (grandchildren) will be proud.
